My name is Lorna Bateson and I work as a private maths tutor from my home in Litlington just near Bassingbourn, Cambridge.
I host friendly, relaxed sessions online predominantly, although I am also happy to work with students with tea and biscuits at my kitchen table.
I am a hugely experienced maths tutor, having worked with over a hundred students over 13 years. I have a first class maths degree, winning various awards during my degree, and then completed one year of a PhD in Applied Mathematics and published an academic paper. Having decided that academic research wasn't for me, I did various other things before deciding to become a teacher. I was selected to be in the first cohort of the Fast Track Teaching scheme which identified future leaders in education and after completing my PGCE at the University of Cambridge I spent 13 years teaching. When I stepped back to raise a family, I was Acting Head of Maths and an Assistant Principal at Comberton Village College.
In my time tutoring I have worked with students aged 10 to 19, covered most exam boards, worked with students from most of the local schools in South Cambs and North Herts, and covered qualifications from GCSEs and A levels to the IB, 11+ and SATs. In addition I have worked as an examiner for two exam boards at both GCSE and A level, and I was also involved in developing content and sample assessment material for the previous OCR GCSE qualification.
My aim when working with a student is just that, to work WITH them to achieve their goals in maths. I strive hard to build their confidence and enjoyment in the subject so they feel like maths is something they can actually do. I often focus in on the core concept behind a topic and over many years I have developed my own methods for unlocking key concepts and blocks for students, whether it is fractions, algebra or calculus.
